The world is facing a biodiversity crisis<\/strong> that demands urgent and collective action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the finalisation of COP16 in Rome last night, governments recognised that closing the biodiversity finance gap<\/strong> is essential to meet the goals of the Cadre mondial pour la biodiversit\u00e9 Kunming-Montr\u00e9al <\/strong>and face this crisis. With Global Greens delegates in the room, negotiations went to the final minutes as governments overcame deadlocks to map out funding to protect nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a crucial step forward, for biodiversity, in a much needed demonstration that  multilateralism remains effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Global Greens welcomes the commitment to scale up biodiversity finance from all sources<\/strong> \u2014 public, private, domestic, and international \u2014 with a focus on ensuring funds flow fairly, rapidly, and directly<\/strong> to those who need them most, including indigenous peoples, local communities, women, and youth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COP16 agreed to reform its finance mechanisms and consider new finance mechanisms<\/strong> that are transparent, accountable to the COP, and more responsive to the needs of developing countries<\/strong>. This is a vital step in building a global biodiversity finance architecture fit for purpose <\/strong>and injects energy and commitment to multilateral processes, which are very much under attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global Greens strongly support the international efforts to mobilize new and additional finance<\/strong>, et align financial flows with nature-positive outcomes<\/strong>. The decision to divert and\/or phase out harmful agriculture and other subsidies is also key to halt further degradation of land and marine areas. We also emphasize the importance of debt relief linked to biodiversity action<\/strong>, et ensuring climate and biodiversity finance and policy work together<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What matters now is turning these commitments into action<\/strong> and for national governments to implement effective National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans <\/strong>(NBSAPs) that implement fully the Global Framework and its targets, quickly and effectively. The Rome COP16 adoption of the Planning, Monitoring, Reporting and Review process enables a more complete monitoring framework to ensure the targets are delivered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nous Greens must all now hold our governments to account<\/strong> to assure that all targets, and in particular the 30% land, marine, and land restoration of targets by 2030, are met.Biodiversity finance must now flow \u2014 fairly, fast, and focused <\/strong>to where it\u2019s needed the most, with real effects. Time is running out and we must do all we can to protect and enhance biodiversity and life on Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
