It encompasses close to 30,000 islands, borders multiple countries across Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, and is <strong>home to 50 percent of the world\u2019s coral reefs<\/strong>. The Pacific\u2019s marine and coastal ecosystems <strong>support the livelihoods, food systems, and cultural identities of millions of people<\/strong>, especially those of the Pacific Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, <strong>climate change and environmental degradation continue to pose a significant threat<\/strong> to the Pacific Ocean and its states. <strong>Rising sea levels and coastal erosion, coral bleaching, ocean warming, and resource exploitation<\/strong> are driving rapid ecological change and challenging the region\u2019s viability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pressing Threats to Climate and Biodiversity in the Pacific<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sea Level Rise and Coastal Erosion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sea level rises pose an <strong>existential threat to low-lying Pacific Island nations <\/strong>like Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji<strong> <\/strong>, who continue to bare some of the worst burdens caused by climate change. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/climate-change-transforms-pacific-islands\">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/a> notes that <strong>sea level rise <\/strong>in the southwest Pacific Ocean is nearly twice the global rate since 1993.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo notes, \u201cAlready we are seeing more coastal flooding, shoreline retreat, saltwater contamination of freshwater supplies and displacement of communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\uc548 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasa-analysis-shows-irreversible-sea-level-rise-for-pacific-islands\/\">analysis<\/a> conducted by NASA estimates 6 inches of sea level rise within the next 30 years for some of these low-lying states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coral Bleaching and Ocean Warming&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pacific Ocean is experiencing <strong>unprecedented levels of coral bleaching<\/strong> due to <strong>record-high ocean temperatures and prolonged marine heatwaves<\/strong>, described as being pushed into \u2018uncharted territory\u2019 for reefs worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<strong>The Great Barrier Reef <\/strong>has been particularly severely impacted by coral bleaching, and has experienced one of its <strong>worst ever recorded bleaching events<\/strong> in 2024. Almost half of the reef experienced record levels of heat stress, with scientists reporting a \u2018graveyard of dead corals\u2019 within sections of the reef. This is the Great Barrier Reefs\u2019 fifth mass bleaching event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Overfishing and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IUU fishing remains a significant threat<\/strong> to the Pacific Ocean\u2019s biodiversity and the economies of Pacific Island Nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;A 2021 report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmis-bycatch.org\/system\/files\/zotero_attachments\/library_1\/FGNFZ2GF%20-%20iuu_fishing_report_hires.pdf\">MRAG Asia Pacific <\/a>estimated that IUU fishing <strong>cost the region an estimated USD 333 million<\/strong> annually between 2017 and 2019\u2013largely attributed to by <strong>underreporting by licensed vessels<\/strong>. This heavily impacts Pacific Island states, where for some, fisheries represent <strong>70 to 80% of national revenue<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Pacific Island states have taken steps towards conservation and more sustainable methods, there is much to be done to slow this persisting threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plastic Pollution and Deep Sea Mining<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plastic waste and seabed exploitation<\/strong> also escalate environmental pressures within the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific is home to the <strong>Great Pacific Garbage Patch<\/strong>, which spans approximately 1.6 million square kilometers, threatening marine life through ingestion, entanglement, and toxic chemical exposure and impacting food security across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, increasing interest in deep sea mining in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone between Hawaii and Mexico is raising concerns for Pacific Island states. Deep sea mining is largely understudied, but all the same, <strong>the harms may be immediate and irreversible<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Green Party Responses and Plans of Action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green Parties across the Asia-Pacific and Oceania are rising to the challenge to respond to these persisting threats largely caused by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/asiapacificgreens.org\/\"><strong>Asia-Pacific Greens<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, the Asia-Pacific Greens, in partnership with Greens Japan, Green Party of Korea, and the Australian Greens, released a statement calling for the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/asiapacificgreens.org\/news_statement\/statement-on-fukushima-waste-dumping-into-the-pacific\/\">suspension of plans to discharge contaminated treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean<\/a>\u2019 in order to protect the health of the people of Japan, the Pacific Region and the environment and biodiversity of the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pacific Island Greens: The Greens of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens.org.nz\/\"><strong>New Zealand Greens<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand is a <strong>leader for the protection and revitalisation of the Pacific Ocean<\/strong> and its ecosystems. The Green Party seeks to establish a <strong>Green Party Minister for the Oceans<\/strong> and pass the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greens.org.nz\/healthy_ocean_act\"><strong>Healthy Oceans Act<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>with aim to <strong>protect at least 30 percent of Aotearoa\u2019s ocean by 2030<\/strong>, work with local communities to create solutions that work for people and nature, and support a $60 million fund to transition to more sustainable fishing practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand, joined by other Pacific Parliamentarians, has also launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificblueline.org\/pacificparliamentarians\">Pacific Parliamentarians\u2019 Alliance on Deep Sea Mining<\/a>, committed to \u2018protect the ocean from mining by large corporations backed by powerful governments\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><a href=\"https:\/\/greens.org.au\/\"><strong>Australia Greens<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian Greens have launched <a href=\"https:\/\/greens.org.au\/portfolios\/healthy-oceans\">action plans<\/a> \uc5d0\uac8c <strong>conserve the Great Barrier Reef <\/strong>\uadf8\ub9ac\uace0 <strong>Great Southern Reef<\/strong> off the coast of Tasmania, aiming to boost funding $4.17 billion and $155 million respectively to protect the diversity of the ecosystems in these regions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian Greens are also committed to initiatives targeted towards <strong>marine invasive species, protection of shark populations <\/strong>in Australian waters<strong>, banning seismic blasting <\/strong>\uadf8\ub9ac\uace0<strong> expanding marine sanctuaries <\/strong>that protect biodiversity, support healthy oceans, and build resilience against climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenparty.ca\/en\"><strong>\uce90\ub098\ub2e4\uc758 \ub179\uc0c9\ub2f9<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2023, the Green Party of Canada warmly welcomed adoption of a new <strong>United Nations treaty on ocean biodiversity <\/strong>which will provide mechanisms to regulate and protect the high seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leader of the Green Party of Canada Elizabeth May notes,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;\u2018Humanity must take energetic action to protect, understand and manage sustainably the deep ocean\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/climate-change-transforms-pacific-islands\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/coral-bleaching\/coral-bleaching-events\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-nasa wp-block-embed-nasa\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"3z1TavxbMD\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/jason-cs-sentinel-6\/sentinel-6-michael-freilich\/nasa-analysis-shows-unexpected-amount-of-sea-level-rise-in-2024\/\">NASA Analysis Shows Unexpected Amount of Sea Level Rise in 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute;
