Oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, regulating climate, producing over half of the world’s oxygen, and supporting extraordinary biodiversity. They provide food and livelihoods to billions and connect ecosystems across continents. Yet, despite their essential role in sustaining life on Earth, oceans are under threat. Climate change, overfishing, plastic pollution, deep-sea mining, and habitat destruction are pushing marine ecosystems to the brink, with cascading consequences for people and planet alike.

For Green Parties around the world, protecting the oceans is both an ecological imperative and a political priority. We stand for urgent action to safeguard marine biodiversity, ban destructive practices like bottom trawling, and create well-managed networks of marine protected areas. We support Indigenous and local communities whose knowledge and stewardship are key to restoring ocean health. By advancing international cooperation and ending the exploitation of marine resources, Greens see a vital opportunity: to defend our blue planet while ensuring justice, sustainability, and resilience for future generations.
