Biodiversity Working Group Official Launch and Statement

Today marks the UN International Day for Biological Diversity and Global Greens recognizes the importance of this by launching the first international Green working group focused specifically on biodiversity.

This year is a critical year for our natural world. As well as many other international activities, this year Cali, in the Republic of Colombia, hosts Biodiversity COP16. Building on the previous COP which saw landmark agreements to protect and enhance nature, the rights of indigenous peoples and much more, the focus will be on delivering.

COP16 will be an important test of how well ambitious international commitments have been translated into action on the ground. Discussions in Colombia will focus on evaluating how well governments are meeting the framework’s goals of protecting 30 percent of the Earth’s lands, oceans, coastal areas, and inland waters by 2030; reforming $500 billion worth of of global environmental subsidies; and cutting food waste in half. Signatories to the GBF are also expected to come to the summit with National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP’s).

Ahead of this, we need to get connected and raise our voice together: acting locally, acting nationally, and acting together, internationally. This is how we make change happen.
