CHRISTINE MILNE

Christine Milne was appointed the first Global Greens Ambassador by the Global Greens Coordination on 1st July 2015.

As an environmental activist, Christine joined the campaign throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s to protect magnificent old growth forests and wild rivers of Tasmania from the rapacious logging industry and the dam builders. As part of the campaign to save the Franklin River in Tasmania and to secure its listing as a World Heritage site, Christine was arrested and imprisoned.

In 1989, she was elected to the Tasmanian Parliament following a successful campaign to protect the farmers and farmlands of Wesley Vale from a highly toxic, native forest based pulp mill. Her election, together with other like minded independents, including Dr Bob Brown, led to the doubling in area of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage site.

Christine became the first woman to lead a political party in Tasmania in 1993 and went on to become the first woman to lead the Australian Greens in Australia’s national Parliament in 2012. She is a firm believer in the empowerment of women, education and social justice.

LGBT+ Rights
Christine successfully campaigned to decriminalise homosexuality in Tasmania in 1997.
Price on Carbon
Christine led the negotiations with the Australian government that resulted in Australia being one of the first countries to introduce a price on carbon.
Tasmanian Gun Reform
Contributed to the campaign for gun reform in 1996.
First Global Greens Ambassador
Was appointed the first ever Global Greens Ambassador.
Extended Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage
Expanded the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage site area by 60% in 1989.
