Biodiversity needs to be given global international attention deserves as its significance to the well being of the planet and all species, including our own is unquestionable.

The Global Greens recognise the value and significance of biodiversity and the dire need to protect it from mismanagement, unchecked exploitation, and unsustainable degradation, the need to preserve and conserve it and the need to recover or recreate it.

We note with concern that the rate at which the global biodiversity is being destroyed is a global and existential crisis and will make significant and growing parts of the Earth uninhabitable, destabilise planetary and systems, and continue species extinction and degradation of ecosystem services.

We also note with significant concern that global efforts to protect and prevent the current massive biodiversity degradation are not yet been satisfactory. This includes areas of large land degradation, heavily deforestation of old growth forests (the lungs of the planet), and destruction of wetlands, savannahs, boreal zones, coral reefs and marine zones all additionally facing the catastrophic consequences of biodiversity loss both as a receiver and a driver of climate change.

We recognise the social and economic challenges faced by the communities which depend on the natural resources for survival and observe that they need alternatives and consultation in protection of lands and waterways.

Therefore, we commit to share critical information through case study publications to;

      • Remind the political and policy makers, non-state actors and individuals that biodiversity sustains life on Earth, and it is the duty and responsibility of everyone to guard and save our biodiversity.

      • Call upon political and policy makers to find practical solutions to address the challenges.

    At COP16 in Columbia in October 2024 nations signatories to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have the critical chance to commit at least 30% of their land surfaces for protection to preserve biodiversity and life on Earth. As the Global Greens we are requesting countries to make this a minimum and strive to 50% protection including a minimum of 30% in marine reserves to protect coastal and ocean ecosystems.

    We will continue sharing  more critical information through further case study publications from across the globe and across over 105 countries in which Green Parties operate and advocating for redirection of adequate resources to replenish the degraded biodiversity.
