COP16 comes at a pivotal time in the race to save the world’s biodiversity. As the first COP since the adoption of the landmark Global Biodiversity Framework 2 years ago at COP15 in Montreal, the focus is now on assessing the implementation and financing efforts of this critical roadmap. The framework seeks to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and ensure the world is at harmony with nature by 2050.
Biodiversity is of vital importance in the regulation of healthy ecosystems. The variety of life on our planet, encompassing the vast diversity of species, genetic variations within species and variety of ecosystems around the globe underpins the natural process humans and all life depend on to live. This includes the air we breathe, the food we consume, our access to clean water, and much more. As a result of human activity, the planet is currently experiencing its sixth mass extinction, with humanity driving a 69% decline in monitored global wildlife populations between 1970 and 2018 (Living Planet Report 2022). Never in the history of life on earth has a single species had such a singularly catastrophic effect and in such a short space of time. According to the UN, approximately one million species of plants and animals are currently at risk of extinction, which marks the largest extinction event since the dinosaurs. The further degradation of the world’s biodiversity poses a significant threat to the wellbeing of all life on earth – including our own and the viability of our societies.
COP16 is the first opportunity to measure collective progress on the implementation of the framework and assess the strategies and plans each country plans to implement in achieving this goal. At present, countries are currently lagging on commitments, with Cali providing the opportunity to ensure all parties meet their responsibilities.
For us in the world’s Greens parties this presents the opportunity to hold those in power to account and deliver real change. Local and regional Green Party’s have a pivotal role in ensuring their states and governments meet their international obligations as agreed upon under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Furthermore, we have the opportunity to draw attention to and build a greater awareness in the broader public of the profound and existential threats posed by biodiversity loss. COP16 will be held in Cali, Colombia, from the 21st October till 1st November 2024.
